“I can’t believe how many useless things I ended up buying when they were young,” laughs mother of two Monica Ni Cheallaigh. “You obviously want the best for your baby but sometimes it is difficult to find exactly what you want.”
Monica, a successful financier, had never planned to have children. However, when Gaby came along she was delighted. “For me, my career always came first, but when I found out I was pregnant, suddenly my whole perspective changed and I couldn’t wait to be a mum.”
When Jake, child number two, arrived, Monica found like many women, that juggling a career and a family was proving too difficult. “It was a tough decision to make,” she sighs. “Due to the nature of my job, I had to leave the house early and often entertain clients late into the night. I had real difficulty finding a suitable nanny that I could trust to look after the children for such a long day.”
After much soul searching, Monica decided to quit her job. However, staying at home with two small children proved more demanding than she ever imagined. “It was exhausting,” says Monica rolling her eyes. “We mothers deserve a medal for just staying sane. My advice to new mums is if anyone offers you any help – grab it!”
Monica soon discovered the difficulty of taking small children out and about. “I was forever frustrated when going in and out of shops at how difficult it was taking coats and jumpers off and on my children, especially when they were asleep. I was constantly torn between following government advice that it was dangerous to dress my children in too many layers and risk them overheating; yet when I had just got them to sleep, the last thing I wanted to do was to wake them up. Also, when I took my kids out on a trip, if there were no cloakrooms, I ended up carrying a selection of heavy coats and jumpers.
Ever the entrepreneur, Monica quickly hit on a business idea that she simply couldn’t shake. Her sister in Australia had raved about a product called ‘Bug in a Rug’. This stylish yet highly practical baby wrap is made from polar fleece or 100% natural cotton and is both warm and lightweight. Velcro fasteners mean it is simple to unwrap and the split leg design means you won’t have to disturb your baby when moving from car seat to pushchair or carry pouch.
“My sister had talked about this product because it is so popular in Australia,” Monica enthused. “As soon as I saw them, I knew that I wanted one immediately! I really liked the fact that they were so easy to use, were supremely snug and comfortable and came in a range of different fabrics, colours and sizes to suit every baby in every season.”
Monica immediately contacted the family run company and soon was the UK distributor. “Once again I’m trying to juggle business and childcare, but my family are my main priority now,” she smiles. “However, this is one product my family couldn’t live without.”
